Apple computers are popular for their high quality, material durability and years of operating system support when compared to competitive products. However, the loaders seem to be the company’s Achilles heel. Therefore, today we will see how to fix the broken charger cable of your Mac so you do not have to resort to buying a new one.
Some last for years, others fall apart along the way
In all this time, three Mac chargers have been broken in the same place: the cable that is attached to the MagSafe connector. And they have not done so suddenly but progressively. The MacBook has endured these five years while the MacBook Pro has already “crushed” two of them.
The process has been similar also in more iPhone and iPad charger cables that I can remember. First, it becomes yellow and dark, probably because it is the one we always use to connect to the device. Then, it hardens. And finally begins to crack and show the inner braid. A few days ago we saw that the reason is that Apple stopped using PVC in its cables to be more respectful to the environment.
When it comes to an iOS device, the cheapest replacement goes through the typical cable of Apple’s MFi program but manufactured by a third party. You can find them for less than 12 dollars instead of 22 or 33 dollars for the officers according to size. But in the case of the Mac, there is no escape. The cable is integrated with the “belt pack” and to fix it the only solution is to use one of the Mac charger cables sold by Apple itself.
Although this problem disappears in the most modern models. Any recent MacBook with USB-C solves it by being able to exchange the cable for another without having to buy a full charger.
How to fix a Mac charger broken cable with Sugru
A few weeks ago, the two Mac chargers that I have at home broke down in the same place. They continue to work, but I know that in the end, the problem is going to get bigger. So I decided to look for an online solution and found a product called Sugru that gave very good results.
It is a moldable mass that adheres to what we want and when it dries, it becomes a rubber that is very difficult to break. That is to say, unlike the adhesives that harden, Sugru provides certain flexibility to what you want to repair. Perfect for a Mac charger cable, although it can also be used on an iPhone or iPad. The process is the following:
- You open the envelope and mould the contents until you get the desired shape, a ball or an elongated figure.
- Use it to surround the cable where it is peeled or broken. Do it in a uniform way because it will stay the way you leave it and it will not be possible to change it.
- Take advantage so that it enters well in the holes of the cable so that the result is as compact as possible.
- When you are satisfied, you should leave it for 24 hours until it dries. In the end, you will have a flexible and durable rubber that will protect the cable of your Mac for longer.
There are packs of three and eight sachets of various colours, ranging from white to black, blue, red, yellow or grey. In my case, I chose the pack of three white for 10 dollars (there is also a pack of 8 for 18.55 dollars ). For the moment and with the short time it has been placed, Sugru seems to be a success. For now, it’s the cheapest way to fix a Mac charger cable without resorting to a new one.
